“Anatomy of a Misfit” by Andrea Portes goes inside the life of the stereotypical high school popular girl.  Anika Dragomir may seem like a regular girl as sweet as pie, but she is anything but stereotypical. She has a “vampire” dad from Romania and is made of spider soup.  Anika’s beauty and intelligence attracts the two boys she’s not allowed to have, according to the one and only Becky Vahuller, the most popular girl at school, who ruins people over gum. Anika falls for the ex-nerd, cool guy who sweeps her off her feet with his mo-ped, but will ruin her social status. And the guy of every girl’s dream wants her. Anika goes through the rollercoaster ride of high school, family, and love.

The story is written magnificently. It looks at the reality of high school life. The corruptness of social status in high school is clearly shown. The characters all feel so life like and the vulnerability created in characters is very relatable. I never experienced a moment in the book where I wasn’t captivated.  Andrea Portes wrote in one of the chapters about something as simple working at a local food hut, but turned it into an interesting story. –“You can’t just crunch up mom’s Valium and put it into his mug.”

I would recommend “Anatomy of a Misfit” by Andrea Portes to readers ages 13-and up. This book is easy to relate. If you are the kind of person who likes realistic fiction and romance then you should definitely read this book.  It will play with your emotions and tug at your heart. After reading “Anatomy of a Misfit” I think a lot more about the value of life and how it should be spent. Overall I think this is a must read.
